"By being the curator of our images, we care for our souls." —Thomas Moore
I am a writer and the author of the new book SHIMMERING IMAGES: A HANDY LITTLE GUIDE TO WRITING MEMOIR published by Griffin/St. Martin's Press. My literary memoir HAWK FLIES ABOVE: JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE SANDHILLS was published by Picador USA/St. Martin's Press. HAWK FLIES ABOVE is a combination of memoir writing and natural history writing, and it won some lovely critical praise, which made me very happy because it speaks for my beloved homeland, the Sandhills region of Nebraska, a vast unpeopled expanse of sand dunes and birds and private sky, a place I love, and a place which is threatened.rnrnI teach Narrative Nonfiction classes for the UCLA Extension Writers' Program, and I speak all over the country about the power of personal stories to change lives. With those speaking engagements I teach people handy little techniques to write memoir, which I believe is the most powerful form of writing in the world because not only is it storytelling, but it is storytelling about the self, and when we re-see our past through the lens of story, a narrative arc, we have the power to change our future. Story is all powerful.
